IIPS 60603: Contemporary Conflict and Peace Processes

Searching for Videos

TYPES OF VIDEOS

Videos can be divided into at least three categories 1) documentary, educational or nonficiton, 2) drama or fiction, and 3) performance (music, dance, etc.).  This course is primarily concerned with documentaries and dramas.  Documentaries are usually well-described for retrieval by subject.  Dramas usually are not.  if already know the title of a relevant drama, you may do a simple title search for it and then "Modify / Limit" to "Visual (Films & Videos)."

We are also concerned with two issues, retrieval and relevancy.  The more precise the search the more relevant the titles and the fewer retrieved.   Greater retrieval usually means less relevancy (i.e. more "junk").

SAMPLE SEARCHES

Here are two model searches that can be cut and pasted into the ND Catalog "Basic Keyword Search"  to retrive videos for this class.  Feel free to add terms in steps 1 or 3 to increase retrieval further or to remove terms in steps 1 or 3 to reduce retrieval.

A GENERAL, BROAD SEARCH -- retrieves approximately 196 records

Step 1

war or wars or conflict or conflicts or violence or revolution or revolutions or genocide or genocides

Step 2

Modify / Limit Search to:  "Visual (Films & Videos)"

Step 4a

Review the list of titles for ones that are on topic. While many won't be relevant there will be some that will be helpful that would be missed in a narrower more focused search.

Step 4b

Step 5

Step 6
